Area code 310 is one of the telephone area codes in the North American Numbering Plan (NANP) for the state of California. It serves the West Los Angeles and South Bay areas of Los Angeles County, as well as a small portion of Ventura County and Santa Catalina Island.

History of 310 Area Code
The 310 area code was created in a split from the original 213 area code on November 2, 1991. The split was intended to relieve the growing demand for phone numbers in the Los Angeles metropolitan area.
On January 25, 1997, the 310 area code was split again, creating the new 562 area code for the southeast portion of Los Angeles County and a large portion of Orange County. The split was motivated by the need to conserve phone numbers and avoid an overlay plan that would have required ten-digit dialing for local calls.
However, by the late 1990s, the remaining 310 area code was running out of numbers again. Several proposals were made to split or overlay the area code with a new one. One of them was to assign the new area code 424 to the South Bay region below Imperial Highway, a major east–west thoroughfare that marks the southern boundary of Los Angeles International Airport. However, this plan faced strong opposition from local businesses and residents who did not want to change their phone numbers or dial ten digits for local calls.
As a result, the California Public Utilities Commission decided to implement an overlay plan for the entire 310 region instead. This meant that both 310 and 424 area codes would coexist in the same geographic area and that ten-digit dialing would be mandatory for all calls. The new area code 424 was added on July 26, 2006.
Today, the 310 and 424 area codes serve about four million customers in one of the most densely populated and diverse areas of California.
