History of 350 Area Code
Area code 350 was created as a result of the growing demand for phone numbers in California. The original area code for this region was 415, which was established in 1947 as one of the first three area codes in the state. In 1957, area code 415 was split to create area code 209, which covered most of central California. In 1998, area code 209 was split again to create area code 559, which covered the southern portion of the region.
By the early 2020s, area code 209 was projected to run out of available numbers by 2023 due to population growth and the proliferation of cell phones and other devices. To avoid this problem, the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) approved the introduction of area code 350 as an overlay to area code 209 on June 24, 2021. The implementation date was set for November 28, 2022, after a six-month permissive dialing period that allowed callers to use either seven or ten digits to complete local calls.
Area code 350 is not the only new area code in California. In recent years, several other new area codes have been introduced or planned to accommodate the increasing demand for phone numbers in the state. These include area codes 279, 341, 442, 510, 628, 657, and more.
