History of 415 Area Code
The history of 415 area code is a story of changes and adaptations to the growing demand for telecommunication services in the Bay Area. The 415 area code was one of the eighty-six original North American area codes established in 1947, covering all of central California.
However, it was soon split and reduced to serve only the coastal region from the North Coast to the Oregon border in 1950, and then reunited with the entire Bay Area in 1953. Since then, it has been split three more times: in 1959, 1991, and 1997, to create area codes 707, 510, and 650 respectively.
Today, the 415 area code encompasses only San Francisco and portions of Marin County. In 2015, due to the exhaustion of central office prefixes, area code 628 was assigned to form an overlay in the same service area, making ten-digit dialing mandatory for all calls within and between the two area codes.
