History of 424 Area Code
Area code 424 was created in an overlay plan on July 26, 2006. An overlay plan is when a new area code is added to the same geographic area as an existing area code to provide more phone numbers for the growing population. An overlay plan requires callers to dial 1 + area code + seven-digit number whenever a call is placed from or to the area code.
Area code 424 was added to the existing 310 area code, which was created in a split from area code 213 on November 2, 1991. On January 25, 1997, area code 310 was split again, creating area code 562 for the southeast portion of Los Angeles County and a large portion of Orange County.
The creation of area code 424 was controversial and delayed for several years due to opposition from some residents and businesses in the Westside community of Los Angeles County. They argued that an overlay plan would inconvenience them by requiring ten-digit dialing even for local calls and would disadvantage subscribers of smaller phone companies. They also proposed alternative solutions such as number conservation and geographic splits to avoid an overlay plan.
However, the California Public Utilities Commission decided that an overlay plan was the best option to meet the increasing demand for phone numbers in the region and to minimize disruption for existing customers.
