History of 479 Area Code
The 479 area code was created on January 19, 2002, in a split of area code 501. The split was necessary to meet the increasing demand for phone numbers in the region. Before the split, area code 501 covered most of Arkansas except for the northeastern and southeastern parts. After the split, area code 501 was reduced to serve only central Arkansas, including Little Rock and Hot Springs.
It was activated on January 19th, 2002 after a six-month permissive dialing period. During this period, callers could use either area code 501 or 479 to reach the same number. After January 19th, 2002, callers had to use area code 479 to reach numbers in northwestern Arkansas.
The area code 479 is one of three area codes in Arkansas. The other two are area code 501 and area code 870. Area code 870 covers northeastern and southeastern Arkansas. There are no plans for any future changes or splits of the 479 area code as of now.
