The 501 area code was one of the original area codes assigned to Arkansas in 1947 when the North American Numbering Plan (NANP) was established. At that time, it covered the entire state of Arkansas.

In 1958, the southern and eastern parts of Arkansas were split off to form the new 870 area code. The 501 area code remained unchanged until 1997 when it was further reduced to its current size by creating the new 479 area code for northwestern Arkansas.
